Taryn Simon's Contraband

TarynSimonContraband_600.jpg

Taryn Simon spent 5 days camped out at JFK’s Terminal 4 documenting the ceaseless flow of contraband confiscated by US Customs for her book and exhibition titled Contraband. Cow-dung toothpaste, unidentified mammals and a deer penis are just some of the 1,075 objects photographed by Simon that didn’t quite make their final destinations. The New York Times Magazine is featuring an excerpt of 40 images from the 500-page book, which will be published by Steidl this fall.
