As the title hints, this is a brief history of celebrated artist John Baldessari. The short film by Catfish directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman and narrated by Tom Waits compresses the artist’s life into 6 laconic minutes and was commissioned by the LACMA.

The other night in Venice Mollusk hosted a little soirée to celebrate Geoff McFetridge’s artist series collaboration with Beck’s Beer. The Marshal Brothers, Kassia Meador, Natas Kaupas, the Matson 2 and crowd hung around for some live music from Cass McCombs, scarfed on some food from Roy Choi’s Kogi Food Truck and sipped some limited edition beer from Beck’s.

I realize this is not the most timely of videos to post, but it still makes me very happy on this fine Friday afternoon watching 75 year old Ray Ives reflect on his long life spent mostly underwater exploring the depths of the ocean and bringing back up lost treasures. Ray is lively old soul who is young at heart. My favorite quote; “I’ve earned enough money to settle down and have an ice cream once a week and a pint of beer”. Who could ask for anything more in life?

I’m getting all nostalgic watching this little spring fling video of Chad Doyle and Justin Quintal meeting up half way from home to surf some warm, north Florida water mounds. It’s moments like these that make me miss hot, sweaty springtime mini swells in St. Augustine. The recent beach dredging has been making some excellent sand bars down there lately. Even Gabe Kling makes a speedy left-hander appearance.

Artist Tom Sachs explains the properties and constitution of plywood and its regulations in terms of the Tom Sachs Studio as part of a new trilogy of short films “Energies and Skills” directed by Van Neistat. The series promotes his mission to Mars show running at the Park Avenue Armory in NYC May 16th – June 17th.
